General Information about our Region and Sector

Our region is made up of 21 separate political jurisdictions and they come together through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government.  

There are several Chambers of Commerce (eg. District of ColumbiaFairfaxMontgomery) around the region and the Greater Washington Board of Trade convenes and represents the business community.


Notable Nonprofit Information

In 2010, there were 1.56 million nonprofits operating in the US. Of those, 618,062 were reporting nonprofits and 979,901 had achieved 501(c)(3) status. In total, these nonprofits contributed $2.06 trillion to the GDP (about 5.5%).

There was a 40.8% increase in nonprofit revenue from 2000-2010.

In 2011, 26.8 percent of adults in the US volunteered with an organization. Volunteers contributes 15.2 billion hours, worth an estimated $296.2 billion.

Health nonprofits make up 12.1% of the public charity sector, but 60% of the revenue.

International and foreign affairs nonprofits have seen the largest amount of growth from 2000-2010: increasing by 90.5%.

Education-related nonprofits made up 16.4% of the revenue made by nonprofits in 2010 at $248 billion.*
